Brean Leisure Park has announced it will once again host the Charity Celebrity Pro-Am Golf Tournament this year on Tuesday 13th May 2008.

The tournament which is in aid of The Injured Jockey’s Fund, St. Margaret’s Hospice and The Alzheimer’s Society is an annual event which has previously included top national hunt jockeys and trainers together with other sporting personalities from golf, football and cricket. Regular participants who attend from the racing world include Carl Llewellyn, Mick Fitzgerald, Luke Harvey, Mark Bradburne, Richard Linley, Martin Bosley and Tony McCoy.

Charity fund raising events staged at Brean Leisure Park over the years have raised over £250,000 shared amongst local and national charities that include the Somerset Air Ambulance, Burnham Area Rescue Boat, Breakthrough Cancer and St Johns Ambulance. In this time the Celebrity Pro Am has raised approximately £50,000 independently.

The event typically attracts between 25 and 35 teams which consist of three amateur players plus one designated celebrity. The winning team receives golf equipment supplied by Brean Golf Club’s resident PGA professional David Haines who will be assisting with the event. The winners also take with them the memorial trophy dedicated to well known local sports fan Tom Childs who sadly passed away in 1998.

If anyone wishes to take part in this charity event, the team fee is £150 which includes all pre-play refreshments and a main meal after the tournament. Tee off times are from 10.15am with presentations at 7pm in The Tavern function suite at Brean Leisure Park.

Further information can be obtained from either Nick Burrett on 01278 752121 or David Haines at the Golf Pro Shop on 01278 752111.

Staff at Brean Leisure Park were bemused last week, to find that two company golf buggies had disappeared from the park within two days. The company use the vehicles for doing all kinds of things on the resort as they are an environmentally and pedestrian friendly way of getting round.

After much confusion and searching it became apparent that one buggy had been stolen during the night. Luckily it was recovered in the morning on a bridle path heading towards Berrow beach.

The cheeky thief struck again, this time taking a buggy belonging to one of the Company Directors, from its space in the car park. This time the lost cart was not so easily reclaimed. The buggy was eventually reported to be found behind the Seagull Inn, a mile from its home.

Brean Leisure Park has now had to put in place extra security precautions to prevent this pointless crime happening again and is appealing for any information relating to the crime.

Work has commenced on Brean Leisure Park’s extension to Brean Golf Club. The wet summer caused a delay but now thanks to some super autumn sunshine contractors have started shifting thousands of tonnes of earth to create of one of the most spectacular golf holes in the South West.

Three generations of the House family are pictured in front of what will be the longest hole in Somerset, with the final approach to the green being over water. Bert (90), Richard (60), and Alan (approaching 30) are all involved in the golf club operation which started back in 1970 with a golf driving range and pitch and putt course. It is anticipated the new holes will be ready for play in 2009.

The total project which will cost in excess of 1 million pounds had had much of the design work carried out in house by golf professional David Haines and head green keeper Robin Williams. It is also hoped to open a pitch and putt course in 2009, and a new clubhouse in 2010.
